Buying Guide for Bluetooth Keyboards and Desktop Suites

Logitech® diNovo™ Media Desktop™

Logitech® diNovo™ Media Desktop™
Features:

  • Included rapid-charge base station/Bluetooth wireless hub allows connections of up to 30 ft. and charges mouse
  • Included MediaPad acts as a remote and communication center
  • Enhanced function keys
  • Ultra-flat, zero-degree tilt designed keyboard
  • MX900 Optical mouse
  • Mouse has quick-switch program selector
  • Installation poster makes setup easy
  • Works with both Windows® XP and Windows® 2000

Given the award of Best Innovations 2004 at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, the Logitech® diNovo™ truly is a thing of beauty. Even so, the first thing you'll probably notice is the price tag, which is very steep. But if you want the best of the best and the most stylish desktop setup, look no further. However, if you just want a nice wireless mouse and keyboard, you might want to look for less-expensive alternatives. The package includes the keyboard, the MX900 mouse, the MediaPad and the rapid-charge base station/Bluetooth wireless hub.

The components of the DiNovo have an elegant thin and sleek design. Due to the fact that it has a zero-degree tilt, the keyboard and the MediaPad are somewhat shallow, nevertheless, typing is so exceptionally smooth that it is almost "fun" to use. The keyboard has internet and e-mail hot keys, as well as audio-playback controls. The package also comes with an innovative detached MediaPad, which functions as a numeric keypad, and a remote control for audio, video, and photo playback on your PC. However, the MediaPad isn't the most comfortable design to fit your hand and navigation is a little tricky. The MediaPad has a built-in LCD that can display the date and time, track information, and text messages from Bluetooth phones and MSN Messenger. The MX900 mouse is pretty much a newer version of Logitech's award-winning MX700. Its sleek, contoured shape fits snugly into your right hand for optimal comfort and it has five buttons, which include a standard right and left button, a scroll wheel and two thumb buttons that let you move forward or backward between pages. The Bluetooth hub/charging station not only charges your mouse, but it also lets you connect up to seven Bluetooth devices at a given time.

Even though this package comes with four separate components, setup is extremely easy and quick. By following the easy-to-understand installation poster you should be able to have everything up and running in about half an hour, including a full 15 minutes dedicated to the Bluetooth and Media Desktop software installation. However, Logitech highly recommends that you remove any previously installed Microsoft Bluetooth components to get the DiNovo's full Bluetooth-hub functionality.

Recommendation: If you want the absolute best a Bluetooth wireless mouse and keyboard has to offer, then you found it. If you just want a simple wireless keyboard and mouse, there are cheaper options.

Microsoft Optical Desktop Elite for Bluetooth

Microsoft Optical Desktop Elite for Bluetooth
Features:

  • Included Bluetooth Adapter allows connections of up to 30 ft.
  • Multimedia center
  • Enhanced F-Key Functionality
  • Sleep and Log Off Hot Keys
  • Side-to-side scrolling on mouse and keyboard
  • Optical mouse with longer battery Life
  • Mouse has Tilt Wheel Technology
  • Installation guide and software
  • Works with Windows® XP (service pack 2 required)
In 2002, Microsoft was the first company to introduce Bluetooth wireless keyboards and mice. There were some connectivity issues with these first devices, but since then, they have continued to focus on developing new and improved Bluetooth wireless desktop solutions. The Microsoft Optical Desktop Elite is by far their most impressive Bluetooth enabled mouse and keyboard package yet. The included Bluetooth compatible mouse and keyboard also deliver enhanced range, reliability and security compared with other wireless technologies. Optical Desktop Elite for Bluetooth includes a mouse, keyboard and USB transceiver (AKA: Bluetooth adapter). IntelliMouse® Explorer for Bluetooth is available as part of the Optical Desktop Elite for Bluetooth, or can be purchased separately with the USB transceiver for Bluetooth. The wireless optical mouse comes with Tilt Wheel Technology, which allows you to scroll horizontally as well as vertically through documents and Web pages. The entire wheel tilts, acts as a button, and reacts smoothly to your movements.

Powered by three AA batteries the keyboard is very big, measuring about 20 by 10.5 by 1.5 inches. It has various quick-launch keys that you can easily customize. Program them to your liking, to open files, programs, Web pages, or shortcuts. The translucent-blue keys are nicely located and have a comfortable feel. There is a tilted scroll wheel on the left edge that helps you navigate pages both horizontally and vertically. There are also forward and backward buttons that are very useful. One of the nicest features is the padded wrist rest built into the keyboard, which provides much better cushion than the plastic ones you'll find on other keyboards.

There are two things to note: First, setup is tricky, so using the installation guide is a must, and second, you must download Windows XP Service Pack 2 in order for the keyboard and mouse to work.

Recommendation: We may have some bias towards Bluetooth products, but this keyboard and mouse package really is the best solution Microsoft offers as far as wireless mouse and keyboard products are concerned. Our reason for saying this: Bluetooth offers better range, reliability and security than other wireless mouse and keyboard products.
