Functions
The functionality of the Motorola H680 is of the same straightforward design as their other models of the same variety. A single side call button is flush to the headset, yet still large enough to use easily. This button answers and ends calls as well as providing call waiting functions. A single volume bar adjusts the volume to comfortable levels and is used to mute calls and disable the LED indicator. A single small slide switch is used for powering the unit on and off.
Using the H680 is easy and comfortable. Its buttons are laid out nicely and its design is simple and elegant. A simple touch of the call button activates the phone for voice dials and tapping it again ends a call. Holding down the call button redials the last call while pressing and holding a volume button rejects calls. Tapping both volume buttons simultaneously mutes the call.
Sound Quality
The sound quality of the H680 was comparable to its price tag. At around $80, it functions as well as expected compared to other similar models, but not as well as higher priced headsets from Motorola. Depending on where my phone was located, I did get some distinct crackling and distortion at times.
The soft rubber ear buds do a good job of isolating the sound, helping to improve the overall sound quality. For louder settings, the volume bar does raise the level enough to hear voices adequately. This headset is ideal for use in environments that do not include loud surrounding noises. So, in-car use is perfect when the windows are rolled up, but forget about it if you are in a noisy, crowded room.
Range
As with most Bluetooth wireless headsets, the H680 works best while in relatively close proximity to your phone. The headset performs best when your phone is on you, at a nearby desk or in your car with you. Motorola gives the H680 a rated range of 33 feet, and after my tests, that's a stretch. It may work at 30 feet, just not very well. I noticed distortion starting at about 5 feet and it just got worse from there.
Conclusion
The Motorola Bluetooth Headset H680 performs well for a variety of applications. It is not quite as technically evolved as some of the higher priced models from Motorola, but does function well for its price. The bonus is the stylishly, discrete design that is extremely comfortable. Plus, its lengthy talk time lets you hold conversations for ample periods at a time. Though men will surely like the sleek design of this headset, women will love the discrete appeal that works well with a variety of fashions. Its slim, rotating ear clip and soft ear buds are comfortable even during extended use and won't irritate sensitive ears. The H680 is an ideal Bluetooth headset that, for most users, will function without any noticeable issues.
