Look at any exercise ad from the past five years and the tell-tale wires of an MP3 player or even a portable CD player grace the ears and neck of the exerciser. By using Bluetooth wireless technology, it is possible to enjoy the same access to music and news while avoiding the entanglement of wires or cords. This is the newest trend in exercise accessories and its quickly becoming more the norm than the anomaly. Whether running or climbing, throwing the ball or kicking it, athletes are finding the ease of Bluetooth functional in every aspect of their workouts.
Not only is Bluetooth technology a fabulous tool for the athletes, but athletic trainers are coming to rely on the technology to monitor their clients’ progress and specific workout information. Using Bluetooth and a software program called the “Faster Fitness Wireless Workout”; the trainer can effectively note possible problems in a client’s workout.
There is also a use for Bluetooth technology when it comes to an athlete’s health. Alive Technologies, an Australian-based company, has created the “Alive Heart Monitor” which sends pertinent medical information to a Bluetooth enabled phone or PDA.
TDK is in the process of developing a technology that will allow exercise machines to send detailed information about the user, heart rate, pulse, etc. to computers via Bluetooth for printing or analysis. A similar use is being applied by NASA for the astronauts’ vital signs while they’re in space.
With this new wave of “smart” technology, Bluetooth is allowing vital fitness information to become an active part of daily workouts, increasing the possibility of success and decreasing the possibilities of injury. Not to mention keeping wire-free access to music and news, which is both safer and more convenient.
Keeping it out of the gym for a moment, there is a new technology recently introduced by Apple and Nike that will make runners and outdoor exercisers smile. The Nike Amp+ bracelet for iPods allows control of the iPod from the wrist, within easy access while the iPod itself can be stored in a pocket, wirelessly communicating with the bracelet. Keep track of running time, song list and heart rate easily.
As Bluetooth technology continues to expand through daily life, our exercise routines will be simplified and safer. Make use of a Bluetooth-powered workout and leave the wires behind.
