VTech Communications Inc.’s new solution for consolidating cellular-only homes with a single, in-house phone system using BluetoothVTECH LS6246 Expandable Cordless Bluetooth Phone System technology might be ideal for households in areas where dropped mobile calls, poor call clarity and range issues give homeowners second thoughts about ditching their landline.

VTech’s LS6245 Expandable Cordless Phone System allows users to pair up to four Bluetooth-enabled devices, including mobile phones and headsets, and connect two of them at the same time. Once paired, mobile phones generally connect automatically unless they are already paired with another device. The Telephone Base also connects to a phone jack and has a built-in digital answering machine for those who are still hanging on to the wired world.

If you and your spouse or roommate can get good mobile phone coverage while standing at your front window or door, but nowhere else in the house, VTech’s new Bluetooth-enabled Expandable Cordless Phone System could be for you. Simply pair two-to-four mobile phones to the LS6246 Telephone Base, and plug them in near your front window or by the front door. Make sure to keep the base within Bluetooth range (about 30 feet) of the charging mobile phones. Then, carry your VTech handset around the house with you or buy one-to-12 accessory handsets to place in strategic locations around the house, and get the same or better reception and sound clarity you would if you were standing with your mobile phone in your calling spot.

With its Expandable Cordless Phone System, VTech has taken a bold step toward providing a workable solution for people who don’t like having to run to find their mobile phone while they’re watching the game or their reality show de jour. With one or more VTech handsets sitting around in key areas, your mobile phone can be in several places all over the house.

There are a few areas where the VTech system falls short. While Bluetooth technology allows for a mobile phone’s contact directory to transfer automatically to a Bluetooth device LCD display, the LS6245 Telephone Base does not include this important feature. That means users will have to manually program all of their phone numbers into the VTech system or keep a contact book handy. In addition, Bluetooth technology allows eight devices to be actively paired at a time, while this VTech system only allows two. Finally, while users can pair a Bluetooth headset with the VTech Telephone Base, it only works if the phone is connected to a landline. There is no reason why a VTech handset couldn’t connect to a Bluetooth headset directly.

The device is attractive to look at, and its sleek touch-screen technology will keep the handset free of dust. As the included cleaning cloth should indicate, however, fingerprints and smudges are quick to gather on the handset.

There are separate buttons to make and receive cell phone and landline calls, and this may confuse users initially until they get used to the device. The handset and base menu features are also needlessly complex, and instead of a directory home menu, the VTech answering system is the default home menu. Since the answering service can’t be used with a cellular-only home, the menu home choice is slightly annoying. VTech should consider making editable display settings or even settings that automatically adjust if the Telephone Base is only connected to mobile phones.

While it has a few issues, the VTech LS6245 really will extend your mobile phone network throughout your house, particularly where you would otherwise have spotty reception. The mobile handset’s range is excellent, and its sound quality superb. As a one-time purchase, it sure beats spending the extra bucks on monthly landline phone service. And if you have landline service, it also works as a good home-phone network.

VTech, the Beaverton, Ore.-based subsidiary of VTech Holdings Ltd., a Hong Kong company, suggests $199.95 for its LS6245 Expandable Cordless Phone System with Bluetooth Wireless Technology, plus three accessory LS6204 handsets. Don’t forget to check out Amazon.com for a price comparison. The link will take you to the handset base station, but Amazon makes it easy to add accessory handsets. As of this writing, Amazon’s price of $194.28 was competitive for the same package VTech suggests.

Hi. I'm looking for the best sound and connectivity for an expandable, wireless, Bluetooth phone system for my landline. I am a hearing aid wearer and my new aids come with a neckloop that pairs as a Bluetooth headset and allows me to hear through my hearing aids. It works fantastically with my cell phone but I've had a difficult time getting it to work with a home phone system for my landline. My aids are made by Phonak, Nadia S. I have tried AT&T and Panasonic and have not had success. What can you suggest to me?

(2)"Your third and forth phones will remain inactive, unless you spend the time to activate one and deactivate another. Again, this is an annoying limitation that should not exist. See your User Manual on how to exchange an active device for an inactive one. The process is needlessly cumbersome."
(3)"Again, only two Bluetooth devices can be active at one time on the VTech system - something that the company MUSTchange in future versions."

OK , we GET IT. You don't like this limitation. I wonder if Vtech is shaking in their shoes right now due to your demand. After all, they MUST change this.
Good luck with that.

I'm glad you know the term "piconet", but I suggest that you know nothing about setting up any kind of a "system" (and I mean PROGRAMMING). You obviously have no idea what may be involved in managing more than 2 active BT connections. I was personally really happy that it does two! I just did a quick search for this type of phone and found a GE, a Motorola and a Panasonic. None of them will handle more than 2 active connections. I think the Panasonic only does one. Did you think about the possible complication of the human aspect of dealing with more than 2? Maybe they didn't want it to be too complicated. I wouldn't even have written this if you hadn't been so childishly persistant about this point, and then downright DEMANDING. Just to recap:
(1)"though only two of them can be active at a time. This is unfortunate, and something that VTech should fix in its next version"

I disconnected the power outlet for a minute and plugged it back in. Blue-tooth started working again, but this is still a hassle.

Just purchased VTech's DS6322-4 system from Costco. I had no trouble pairing my 2 LG VX9700 cellphones to the base. I then downloaded one cell directory without issue. When I try to download directory of the 2nd cell using VTech handset menu prompts I get "connection failed" msg. If, during the connection process I instruct my cell to connect I then get "bluetooth system busy" msg on the vtech handset. I have removed both active & paired cellphones and reinstalled only the 2nd. To no avail, I still get a "connection failed" or a "bluetooth system busy" msg.
