Pairing
I tested Aliph’s New Jawbone Bluetooth headset with Motorola's RAZR V3c Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone as well as my brand new MOTO W755 VCast phone using my Verizon Wireless mobile phone service. Because I have a Motorola phone, I made sure my Bluetooth antenna was turned on before proceeding. I also had to charge the headset first (see below).
The pairing process in general was intuitive and not unlike the procedure for most Bluetooth headsets. Yet, consulting the user manual for both the New Jawbone and your mobile phone may be useful for less experienced users.
For the first phone, the New Jawbone was already in pairing mode when I turned the device on, so pairing it was a snap. For the second phone, I had to hold down the middle talk button and the peripheral Noise Assassin Button for 2 seconds when the device was off to initiate pairing mode. The New Jawbone LED indicator flashed red and white when pairing mode was initiated. The pairing mode will last for 3 minutes, or until pairing is complete.
While the Jawbone is flashing red and white, I set my mobile phone to search for all available Bluetooth devices. The RAZR and W755 found the Jawbone within two seconds and displayed “Jawbone” on the screen. I entered the passkey found inside the user manual and pressed “Yes” on my phone to pair the two devices. Other phones may say “OK” instead. At that point, your Jawbone should be successfully paired with your mobile phone.
Battery Life and Charging
Aliph’s New Jawbone Bluetooth headset takes an insignificant 50 minutes to charge for the first time and each time after that. It can be charged to 80 percent after 35 minutes on subsequent charges.
To charge, I simply plugged the wall-charger into a socket, attached the USB cable to the wall-charger and the New Jawbone to the cord’s other end. A magnetic guide helps you put the Jawbone in exactly the right place to charge it. Jawbone users may also choose to plug the USB charger cord into a powered USB port on their Mac or PC.
After charging, the Jawbone gets almost exactly the 4 hours of talk time stated by Aliph in the user manual, if not a little bit more. But the talk time is less than Aliph’s previous Jawbone, which had more space to fit a larger battery. It seems likely that the New Jawbone would get the stated 192 hours of standby time, but I wasn’t able to test this because I routinely plugged the device in at night as a force of habit. Jawbone automatically enters standby mode at the end of each call.
During one test of the Jawbone’s longevity, however, I spoke on the phone for at least 2 hours and allowed the headset to sit in standby mode for at least 2 days before charging it.
When the Jawbone’s internal rechargeable battery is nearly depleted in active or standby mode, the LED indicator will flash red. It then needs to be plugged into its charger. The LED indicator will be red during charging and changes to white when ready for use.
The charging connection on the New Jawbone is also an improvement over the older version. In the previous version, the end of the USB cable that attaches to the Jawbone has four prongs that connect with four-of-five metal strips on the black end of the headset. In the new version, the end of the USB cable that attaches to the Jawbone has four metal strips that protrude slightly and connect magnetically with four metal strips on the back end of the headset. The magnetic feature makes it easy to find the right connection and the change from prongs to metal protrusions makes the connection sturdier. The New Jawbone connection is likely to last longer than most headsets I’ve reviewed – a bonus for a well thought-out design.
Style and Comfort
Aliph’s New Jawbone has invisible buttons under a smooth, fish-scale medical-grade plastic coat. According to designer Yves Béhar, the device has an outer shield, “curved and rectilinear to follow the face,” and the surface becomes animated with highlights and shadows when worn.
Even the packaging of the New Jawbone is designed to attract. With clear plastic showcasing the New Jawbone device highlighted by black wrapper, the product is attractive from the retail shelf to the user’s ear.
The New Jawbone’s inner surface is ergonomically designed to fit comfortably against the skin and to ensure the voice activity sensor touches the cheek. Still, the sensor is not detectable.
The device comes in black, gold and silver. The black looks best to me, because it is streamlined, but the gold also has a classy look. The silver version looks more like a grey, just like in the last version. Color preferences of course, are up to the user.
The headset didn’t seem to fit snugly in my ear with any of the earbuds without also using an earloop. The headset fell out of my ear with a simple shake of my head without an earloop. With an earloop (I used the medium-sized leather earloop that came already attached to the device), the Jawbone fits well, stays where it is and feels good. Wearing the device over extended periods of time did not make my ear less comfortable. The New Jawbone comes close to the top level of comfort Bluetooth devices have to offer.
The New Jawbone goes above and beyond by offering leather-coated earloops, which offer the best comfort even while wearing glasses. Aliph includes two slip earloops that are built for people who wear glasses. They really do the trick.
At 0.4 ounces (11.3 grams), the Jawbone is below-average weight, and I could barely feel it on my ear. The headset 2.1 inches (5.3 cm) long, 0.6 inches (1.5 cm) wide and 0.9 inches (2.3 cm) thick, about 50 percent smaller than the previous version and the same size as many sleeker units on the market. The size difference does make the device look better, but the sacrifice is battery life. Though I cannot be certain, the size change might be responsible for a slightly reduced sound quality for the user from the previous version.

Unfortunately, as with almost all Bluetooth headsets, the battery is not replaceable. That means that over time, the battery inside the headset will wear out, requiring more frequent charges. Eventually, the device will have to be discarded and replaced. At this point we can only hope that headset makers will take this issue into consideration and, at the very least, offer battery replacement services.
