Before buying an aftermarket head unit, here are some important things to consider:
- Some car manufacturers integrate other features with their car stereo systems, like climate controls, making it difficult to replace units. Make sure you are able to interchange your head unit.
- Don’t buy a head unit just because it looks cool. Make sure you are comfortable with its functions and overall operation. Some units are not ver user friendly. Remember, you are the one who has to change tracks, switch radio stations, etc.
- Make sure you know what features and options the head unit supports. For instance, if you want the ability to wirelessly stream music, the head unit must support Bluetooth A2DP. Currently, the majority of Bluetooth car stereos only support the Handsfree profile, which only allows you to make and receive phone calls via the head unit. There are only a handful of Bluetooth A2DP car stereos on the market right now, but more are expected.
- What type of theft prevention does the stereo offer? With most stereos the face of the head unit is either partially or fully detachable, which is a good deterrent from theft. Some models may even have a flip face, where the face flips around so no one can see it. Without the face of the head unit, the stereo system is pretty much useless. The last thing you want to do is spend hundreds of dollars on a unit just to have it stolen the next day.
- When ordering online, make sure to read any available reviews. Getting other people’s opinions can make the buying process a little less stressful.
