Bluetooth Technology to be Added to the Apple iPod

You knew it was bound to happen. The Apple iPod will be going wireless! According to Tony Smith of Reg Hardware, PortalPlayer, the maker of the audio processor in the iPod, is adding Bluetooth technology and Wi-Fi support to its products.

Teaming up with Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR), the two companies will integrate PortalPlayer's PP5022 audio chip family with CSR's UniFi Wi-Fi and Bluetooth controller. This will be demonstrated at the 3GSM trade show next week in Barcelona.

With this new technology, all devices using the PortalPlayer audio processor will be able to stream music wirelessly to Bluetooth headphones as well as access music on their Bluetooth enabled computers.

Rumors of a Bluetooth iPod have been swirling around for many months. There are more recent rumors of a music related event where many people speculate that Apple will announce their wireless plans. Unfortunately, the new chip from the two companies won't be available until later this year.

There are already a variety of Bluetooth iPod Accessories available for purchase.
