More Multimedia Players to Offer Bluetooth

Semiconductor manufacturers SigmaTel Inc. and Infineon Technologies AG recently announced they have entered an agreement to provide Bluetooth technology for portable digital multimedia devices.

The agreement states the two companies will work together to develop a Bluetooth chip specifically designed for digital multimedia devices. The chip will be based on SigmaTel's portable multimedia SoC solutions. It will combine SigmaTel's optimized radio architecture with Infineon's knowledge of Bluetooth technology, chip design, CMOS process technology, and manufacturing expertise.

The objective of this agreement is to expand the integration of Bluetooth technology in MP3 players, portable multimedia devices, and stereo headsets. The Bluetooth chip will be marketed exclusively by SigmaTel.

Before the two companies can begin production on the Bluetooth chip, SigmaTel will begin to utilize Infineon's BlueMoon UniCellular Bluetooth 2.0 EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) chip as part of its STMP3600 MP3 player Reference Design Kits (RDK). The kits will provide a turnkey system, including the Bluetooth upper stack software and necessary Bluetooth profiles.

SigmaTel's STMP3600 RDK with the Infineon BlueMoon UniCellular Bluetooth chip is now sampling to SigmaTel's beta customers for production in the Q2.
