The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) announced plans to work closely with the Wi-Fi Alliance and the Near Field Communication Forum to further develop wireless standards. The SIG’s announcement is a result of the current demands of the wireless marketplace. Customers are now demanding devices which offer a user-friendly experience and provide an overall combined wireless solution.
There are over 4000 member companies in the Bluetooth SIG, and many of them are involved in the development of various wireless technologies. The Bluetooth SIG has once again displayed its true spirit of cooperation by taking this step and stating its belief that unification is the best method to improve wireless solutions.
"Identifying synergies between wireless technologies and leveraging the experience and know-how of mature technologies will lead to better wireless solutions, faster. Three new Bluetooth enabled products are being qualified every day making it the most proven wireless technology for the personal area network on the market," said Michael Foley, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Bluetooth SIG. "Consumers demand an easy-to-use wireless experience, regardless of technology. With so many organizations developing wireless technologies, we need to put the focus on the consumer and work together to enhance their overall wireless experience."
"From a device standpoint, this can be a very significant takeoff point for improved wireless communications," said Richard Shim, senior research analyst at IDC. "Each of these standards have been making a lot of headway as separate efforts, despite interference issues with one another. Combining efforts may lead to higher throughputs and less interference in the future."
