Bluetooth technology is steadily growing in popularity, and the market for devices that support Bluetooth technology has increased substantially over the past year.
A recent report from Strategy Analytics, a global research and consulting firm, states that in 2005, the market for Bluetooth devices increased to more than 272 million units. This figure is double the amount of units shipped globally in 2004.
Up until now, market growth has been primarily driven by Bluetooth enabled cell phones and their ability to offer users the feature of hands-free communication.
2006 promises to bring even further growth and success for Bluetooth technology. Signs of this success were especially evident at this years annual CES (Consumer Electronics Show), which was held last week in Las Vegas. The show featured a wide variety of new Bluetooth devices, some receiving prestigious awards.
The Scosche IPBCK Bluetooth System, which provides a Digital wireless connection between your iPod® and car stereo, was named the 2006 CES Innovations winner.
The report from Strategy Analytics covers Bluetooth chip vendors and their specific marketing plans, which respond to the expected growth of Bluetooth cell phones and other devices.
Chris Taylor, the Director of the Strategy Analytics RF & Wireless Component Service (RFWC), claims "Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) has maintained a strong lead in the Bluetooth chip market by aggressively reducing cost, power consumption, and footprint, while increasing data rates and adding features to its chips. This has allowed it to stay ahead of powerhouse competitors, including Texas Instruments and Broadcom."
"CSR is well positioned to maintain market share in cellphones, headsets, notebooks, and automotive applications," Mr. Taylor continued. "However, the anticipated marriage of Bluetooth with ultra wideband (UWB) could move the advantage to Freescale, Texas Instruments and other UWB players in emerging high data rate applications, such as short-range, wireless streaming video."
