You may remember the big announcement about the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) and its plans of integrating Bluetooth technology and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) wireless technology. Well, for at least now, you can forget about it.
It appears there isn’t enough solidarity among the various groups which are involved with the UWB standard, and they are all heading in different directions. As a result, an agreement simply can’t be reached with the Bluetooth SIG. Surprisingly, the Bluetooth SIG doesn’t seem to care really that much.
The objective for the Bluetooth SIG’s goal of integrating the two wireless technologies was to speedup Bluetooth’s data transmission rates from the current rate of 768Kbps to broadband speeds of up to 200Mbps.
The SIG still plans on achieving this goal and said it will continue to examine how Bluetooth and UWB technologies can work together. They’re going to take their time and hopefully in the end an agreement can be reached.
