Mike Foley, President of the Bluetooth SIG, recently showcased the new Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) specification on Gear Live's website. The goal of Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR is to reduce the amount of power usage, improve overall user experience and offer improved security.
Features of Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR Specification
- Lower power consumption (battery life extended by up to 5 times)
- Enhanced security
- Simplified pairing process
One of the coolest aspects of Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and what Mr. Foley calls the “hallmark feature of the new specification”, is its ability to incorporate Near Field Communication technology. Near Field Communication is another wireless technology which allows devices to find each other easily. With this added technology, all you have to do is hold two Bluetooth devices next to each other and pairing occurs automatically. Just touch to connect (See the demonstration in video below)! Thanks to Near Field Communication technology, previous issues associated with the Bluetooth Pairing Process should be eliminated.
When Can We Expect to See Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR Products?
The specification is just being finalized now and according to Mike Foley, the first Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR devices should be available by the holiday season.
